Teacher Feature – Mark Gibbs

MarkYour favourite musician or composer: My favourite composer is Beethoven. I love playing the viola part in his string quartets and symphonies. They are amazing pieces which are physically really fun to play! My favourite musician is Matthew Bellamy, the frontman of Muse. I love the energy he puts into his live performances!

Why do you enjoy teaching:  I love seeing my pupils enjoying playing their instrument. Seeing the improvement in someone’s playing over a period of time is also very satisfying.

Your top tip for pupils: Play your instrument every day. Even if it’s only for a few minutes, it will help your muscles stay supple and keep your playing in good shape.

When you’re not teaching what are you up to: I freelance as a viola player in London so I spend a lot of time playing with different orchestras and practising for auditions. Outside of music, I’m a Manchester United supporter, so I spend a lot of time following them!

Where can we see you perform: I play as an extra with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and in The Phantom of the Opera in the West End. My string quartet is also performing a complete Beethoven quartet cycle this year (check us out on Facebook- London Beethoven Project!).
